The estimation of pollutant emissions due to transport through the Frejus tunnel is the first case study tackled in the project. The Frejus tunnel is a 12km tunnel that connects Italy and France through the Western Alps. The tunnel has recently become an important trans - European node, especially after the Mont Blanc tunnel accident, which caused a sudden and drastic increase of heavy-duty traffic through the Frejus.

The total emissions of CO(2), NO(x), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and particulate matter (PM), caused essentially by the transit through the tunnel, have been considered in the study for the years 2000 and 2010.
