Abstract

The round robin test was performed solely on 220 litre standards with fissile and non-fissile radionuclides. These standards were submitted to a wide range of different non- destructive examinations, for example gamma spectroscopy, radiography, dose rate measurements, active and passive neutron measurement, etc.

From the beginning of this round robin test, it was planned to transport 220 litre standards to participating institutes situated in seven European countries, because most of the non-destructive assay (NDA) systems are in daily use and permanently fixed. The organisation of the transport caused a delay during the execution of the project.

The main conclusion of the non-fissile round robin test is that, for 220 litre standards with and without internal shieldings and with proper correction procedures installed, the following ranking of NDA gamma system classes -which are defined in detail in the report -can be obtained. First, 'tomography-based' systems, second, systems like (in alphabetical order) 'angular scanners, segmented scanners and swivelling scanners', and, finally, 'open geometry systems'. The round robin test also showed that the error assessments of most NDA systems have to be improved.

The recommendations based on the non-fissile test results, gained from existing experience, are a mixture of general and background information for institutions setting up new QA/QC NDA systems and information for laboratories, which like to improve their NDA systems or services. The recommendations, however, should also be seen in the larger context of existing literature on NDA of waste packages.
