Abstract

This is the 1999 annual report for COST Action 838 'Managing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for improving soil quality and plant health in agriculture'. The main objective of the action is to gain knowledge essential for the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in improving plant health and fitness, in production of high-quality food, and in conservation of natural resources. This action started in May 2000. This publication contains the proceedings of a workshop on 'Arbuscular mycorrhizas and plant health under abiotic stress' and a position paper on 'Possible guidelines and data requirements for approval of commercial use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the EU' in which the scientists involved express their opinion regarding the registration of AM fungal inocula and the possible data requirements. Finally, a directory of European laboratories working on arbuscular mycorrhizas is included.
