Abstract

The project FMERS (Forest Monitoring in Europe with Remote Sensing) was designed to identify the best standard methodology to be applied for the realization of a pan-european forest cover map based on remotely sensing data. In this paper, the sources of information used (data from optical passive and radar active sensors and from high to medium spatial resolution), the methodology tested (supervised and unsupervised) and the results obtained in six training areas are shown. On the basis of the obtained results and unsupervised procedure is proposed for the second operative part of the project.
