This report describes the preparation of a freshwater sediment reference material characterised for its tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), monobutyltin (MBT), triphenyltin (TPhT), diphenyltin (DPhT) and monophenyltin (MphT) contents. The outcome of feasibility studies, homogeneity and stability studies and the analytical work performed for the certification of the contents of TBT (Sn(C4H9)3+), DBT (Sn(C4H9)22+), MBT (Sn(C4H9)3+), TPhT (Sn(C6H5)3+), DPhT (Sn(C6H5)22+) and MPhT (Sn(C6H5)3+) are described. The report contains all the results and details of the methods used to certify the mass fractions (expressed on a dry mass basis) of tributyltin (480 ± 80 ì as TBT cations), dibutyltin (770 ± 90 ì as DBT cations), monobutyltin (610 ± 120 ì as MBT cations), triphenyltin (29 ± 11 ì as TPhT cations), diphenyltin (36 ± 8 ì as DPhT cations), and monophenyltin (69 ± 18 ì as MPhT cations)
