Abstract

This report describes the preparation, packaging and testing of a reference film intended to be used to test if foodstuffs make 'fatty contact' when placed in contact with plastic materials and articles such as packaging materials.

From observations related to the interaction of fats with plastics, polyethylene was the obvious choice for the BCR-CRM. Polyethylene has also been the most thoroughly examined polymer in both formulation studies and migration studies conducted by many laboratories over a number of years.

The need for a test method for 'fatty contact' and a certified reference material with which to conduct the test, stems from the classification of foodstuffs according to Directive 85/572/EEC. It is the classification of foodstuffs according to this directive (into aqueous, acidic, alcoholic or fatty in nature) that then dictates the food simulant to be used for testing the packaging for overall migration and specific migration according to Directive 90/128/EEC.

The BCR -certified reference material (BCR-CRM) is manufactured from low density polyethylene into which a fat-soluble fluorescent additive, 1,4-diphenyl 1,3-butadiene (DPBD), was incorporated. ated.
