This paper discusses specific requirements for the integration of PV systems into the building environment. Where PV elements are applied as building components they become a part of the building envelope. However, the primary function of the building envelope is to protect the occupants from the external climate and maintain a comfortable, healthy indoor environment. The building structure does not necessarily produce the optimal conditions for PV. The thermal and electrical performance of building integrated PV components should therefore be considered as an added value.
