The urban underground water infrastructure represents a significant part of a municipality's real capital. The maintenance of this capital will be given increasing emphasis in the future. Diagnosis of the status of urban water supply and wastewater systems has been subject for a European co-operation within the framework of the COST program. The aim with this co-operation is to exchange technology within the European community and to identify gaps in the present knowledge. A group of experts from thirteen countries has formed the base for the activities in the COST C3 action.

COST Action C3 'Diagnosis of urban infrastructure', launched in November 1994, gathered 50 members representing 12 of the 32 COST member countries and an associated institution from Canada. The main objective of this Action, relevant to the urban civil engineering domain of COST, has been to draw up optimised diagnosis methods of urban infrastructure and their inter- actions with built and non-built environment.

The present volume contains the proceedings of the final workshop of COST Action C3, which was held in Brussels on 18 and 19 May 2000. This event was the occasion for the Action members to display the main results and conclusions of the work implemented by the Action in the following domains:

-water distribution networks;
-sewer networks;
-sustainable stormwater solutions;
-management issues;
-vegetation and urban civil engineering.
