The use of mosses to evaluate the soil depositions and the quality of water for trace metals began in 1960s. A lot of water courses have been controlled so far in France and Great Britain using indigenous and transplanted mosses, at the same time there has been a large use of mosses in order to evaluate deposition of trace metal in the Northern Europe.

In Italy the studies began from the end of 1980s with acquatic mosses and from the 1990s to evaluate air quality. The El in the last years co-operated in several national and european projects. About 500 stations have been sampled in Italy so far and the map of trace metal deposition will be ready until the end of 2001. .
