Relevance of CORINE Land Cover for reporting on Nature Protection at Regional Level
This study is framed within the activity called Regional sustainable Development with respect to nature conservation of the MOLAND Project (http://moland.sai.irc.it/activities/nba/nba.htm ). MOLAND (Monitoring Land Use / Cover Dynamics at http://moland.sai.jrc.itl ) is a research project carried out at the Space Applications Institute of the Joint Research Centre. MOLAND was initiated to respond to the main mission of the JRC, which is to support the preparation, definition and implementation of EU policies and legislation. MOLAND addresses specifically the issues mentioned in the European Spatial DevelopmeI1 Perspective (ESDP) that are related to urban and regional development. The activity Regional sustainable Development with respect to nature conservation particularly focuses on the integration of biological and landscape diversity issues into regional planning policies. It aims to provide technical and scientific support to the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) and to EC initiatives on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), with emphasis on the role of multi-sectorial sustainable development in protecting the environment. It also demonstrates the use of the upcoming NA TURA-2000 network of protected areas (to be established in the timeframe 1995-2005 under the "Birds" and "Habitats" Directives) as a potential valuable tool for delivering land planning and development policies in agreement with other European Directive recommendations.
