Modelling and optimising of oxygen lances, tuyeres, and of the injection technique of various materials into electric arc furnaces

Due to lack of detailed knowledge on the relevant physical processes, the operational techniques for oxygen and solid material injection in the electric arc furnace (EAF) are often based on experience only. Therefore, after systematic analyses of plant data and operators' practice, the influence of important operational parameters on the fluid dynamics in the DC EAF has been investigated in order to find optimised lancing conditions.

Physical and numerical simulations lead to the conclusion that increasing the oxygen flow rate is most effective to enhance bath mixing, particle dispersion and slag foaming, but leads to increased splashing. An acceptable compromise was achieved using an optimised two-hole lance configuration. Furthermore, optimum lance inclination angles were determined.

Industrial trials in the steel plants of ProfiIARBED, Differdange, and ARES, Schifflange confirmed the modelling results. They led to the construction and industrial utilisation of a new type of water-cooled lance, combining the primary oxygen with a secondary oxygen flow for post-combustion and an injection nozzle for particles, such as fine carbon, recycled dust or DRI fines.

Dolomitic lime was injected by means of consumable lances contrasting with the classic addition in rock form by baskets. Process parameters, such as the adequate period for injection, particle flow rate, grain size and quantity, or the lance diameter, were optimised in order to achieve the lowest energy consumption, the best dephosphorisation and desulphurisation properties and the smallest carry-over rate in the fumes. While taking into account economical and operational considerations, the best technical process parameters were defined. ined.
