Development and control of suitable slag systems for improving steel cleanliness in ladle treatment and tundish metallurgy

Model calculations and laboratory measurements show that lowest FeO activities in the discussed range of the CaO-SiO(2)-AI(2)O(3) slag system can be realised at lime saturation and high AI(2)O(3) content. The determined activity coefficients of FeO(n) in lime-aluminiaslags and heat-treatable steelgrades in dolomite ladles were found to be in good agreement with literature, model calculations and laboratory measurements. Based on the very low activity coefficients of FeO achievable in this system, it is possible to practise diffusion deoxidation on heat-treatable steels. The oxygen activities obtained by this process are below 10 ppm. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that by refining 12% Cr steels, Cr(x)O(y) content in the slag below 1% has no influence on FeO(n) activity. The activity of Cr(x)O(y) was found to be zero at these low levels.
