Abstract

For reaching an improved dynamic control of the foaming slag practice and an optimisation of the EAF (electric-arc furnace) operations, several items were investigated:

--the identification and the selection of foam-height monitoring systems using various sensors {sonic-meter, photometer, radio-wave, etc.) and arc current/voltage analysis;
--the assessment of the optimum operating zones {slag formation, arc behaviour, etc.); --the modelling of the slag detection and of the slag control.

For detecting the slag foam level in AC as well as in DC furnaces the noise analysis system (sonic-meter sensor) represents the most attractive technique. Correlation established between the sound signal and the volume and quality of the foaming slag present in the vessel during the refining period allows an online guidance of the carbon and oxygen injection and of the lances positioning.

A new optical device for monitoring the relative position of the arc and of the foaming slag has been tested in and AC furnace producing stainless steel. It is based on IR and UV photo-transistors and complements the information of the other sensors.

A more regular and reliable control of foaming slag practice allows gains at several levels. For the carbon steel production, an enhanced control of the slag level leads to a saving of the electricity consumption varying between 10 and 25 kWh/t depending on the type of furnace considered.

Other advantages of a good control of the slag foaming are a substantial decrease of the steel nitrogen at tapping and a reduction of the splashing and skulking problems.

Based on the sonic-meter or on the optical devices, the sensor information is displayed in real time in the control room of several steel plants in order to provide a guideline to the operator. he operator.
