Abstract

Not so many years ago regions, their definition and description, were key issues in geography. It is not so long ago that the landscape became an important concept, and only approximately 20 years since landscape ecology was introduced; recently bio-diversity came into the front. The degree of multidisciplinary has grown steadily as a consequence of a shift of emphasis from single landscape elements to the interaction between these and as a consequence of the accumulated knowledge about the processes in the landscape. But, maybe first of all, because it is the only way in which one can support the request for sustainable use and development of the landscape and its various resources and potentials. Sustainable multifunctional use of the landscape seems to be the main topic presently.

In the sixties and seventies it was discussed whether one should concentrate on the type of landscapes or on the single landscape elements, whether to use an inductive or a deductive approach. In principle the same discussion is going on when one has to decide whether a statistical oriented sampling approach or a total mapping approach should be used for landscape and environment monitoring. .
