Abstract

This project was aimed at developing mathematical models for various issues arising from the lateral steel-fed continuous casting process, and to perform numerical calculations. The issues concerned flows in the molten metal, deformation of the partly solidified strip in the casting slot, the freezing up and development of strip and caster roller temperatures, the analysis of tension on the solidified strip and the calculation of thermal conditions on the fire-resistant casting nozzle. Since, in the course of the project it was not possible to complete the series of experiments at the continuous casting plant in Unna, further calculations were arranged for subsequent use with the twin roll caster procedure. This has resulted in a broad set of transferable physical and mathematical descriptions of the above-mentioned issues and associated materials data, all of which can be used for twin roll caster roller procedures as well as the processes treated under the present project.
