Mould powder development for faster casting speeds and thin slab casting

Abstract

This collaborative, multinational project involving British Steel, Hoogovens (the Netherlands), CSM (Terni and Rome, Italy), Sidenor (Spain) and VAl (Austria) was aimed at the development and understanding of mould powder properties at faster casting speeds in conventional casting and thin slab casting.

In the continuous casting process, the casting speed is determined by a number of factors such as caster design and condition, casting practice, section size and shape, steel grade and mould powder properties and performance. Of these factors, the mould powder is amongst the most critical. Its properties must be selected to provide a liquid slag of optimum composition, viscosity, infiltration, lubrication, heat transfer and crystallisation to ensure minimum sticking of the strand and best surface quality. To meet the requirements for increasing casting speeds in conventional continuous casting, significant changes are often made to the composition and material make-up (raw material type, source and size fraction of phases) of the powder. In thin slab casting, typically 40mm to 125mm thickness, the casting speeds are up to, and often above, 5 m/min, especially for the thinnest sections cast. Here, the requirements of the mould powder are more stringent, as both the powder itself and the liquid slag depth have to accommodate events such as casting speed changes significantly faster than for conventional casting: in this respect, melting rate, liquid slag pool depth and viscosity are critical.
