  • Criteria for the Identification of Freshwaters Subject to Eutrophication. Their use for the implementation of the "Nitrates" and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directives

The purpose of the study is to present a comparative analysis of the criteria used by Member States to define eutrophication in freshwater environments. It addresses the group (a) of Annex II of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and the group (b) Annex IA of the Nitrates Directive and particularly, lakes and rivers.

The document describes a possible strategy for the development of nutrient criteria, taking into account the relevant elements of the Water Framework Directive.

A proposal for the harmonisation of criteria to identify eutrophication in freshwater systems is also described.
