Abstract

The cyclic test on a scaled (1:2.5) reinforced concrete bridge pier is presented in this report.

A description of the V AB research programme is followed by a summary of the design, construction and instrumentation considerations. The most important results of the test are presented in terms of force-displacement, moment-curvature, and energy dissipation. The flexural and shear deformations are split and the different levels of displacement and curvature ductility are identified. Different expressions for the evaluation of the plastic hinge length are presented along with a number of damage indices.

The scaled bridge pier is compared to a bridge pier constructed according to EC8 and tested until failure under cyclic loading.

The results of pre-test numerical calculations are presented and the implemented model is evaluated.

The behaviour of existing bridge piers is evaluated and conclusions are drawn in comparison to bridge piers designed according to modem seismic codes.
