Good Practice Guide to Surface Colour Measurements

Surface colour measurements are of great importance in the production of a very wide range of manufactured goods. Industry needs to be able to measure colour within the limits of the human eye, about 0.5 delta?(a,b) CIELAB units. An earlier European inter-comparison of surface colour measurements showed that 50% of colour measurements made by national standards laboratories did not agree within this limit. A reduction in uncertainties of colour measurements is needed to improve competitiveness in the trading of coloured goods.

A research project was proposed to the European Union to investigate error sources in surface colour measurements and to derive correction factors and measurement methods that minimise the uncertainty in these measurements so that 95% of the times that surface colour measurement made in different laboratories are compared, they agree within 0.5 delta?(a,b) CIELAB units.

Such a project, entitled "Harmonisation of National Scales of Surface Colour Measurements", was approved and funded within the EU Fourth Framework Programme under contract SMT4-CT96-2140. Seven laboratories from seven countries of the European Union with national responsibilities in colour measurements and two companies related to the field formed the partnership of this project. ct.
