Improvement of vacuum circulation plant operation on the basis of the BFI simulation model

Within a preceding ECSC project, BFI developed a simulation model of the vacuum circulation process for steel decarburisation. This model was adapted to the RH plant of VASL and extended to further metallurgical operations and state values.

Models for denitrogenation and dehydrogenation were developed, in order to cover all degassing processes which are performed in the vacuum circulation plant. Furthermore, the steel temperature, as additional state value, was included in the model. The calculation of the steel oxygen content was modified for online purposes. Finally, the effect of stirring gas injection in the vacuum vessel on the degassing behaviour was included in the model. The extended simulation model was verified with the help of data of numerous heats collected at the AH plant of VASL.

Based on the complete simulation model, the effects of the main plant design and operation parameters (snorkel diameter, lift gas flow rate and suction speed of the vacuum pumps) on the degassing behaviour were investigated. Additionally, experiments with a physical cold model built at CSM Laboratories were performed. The influence of number and diameter of the lift gas tuyeres and the effect of tuyere clogging as well as the stirring gas injection in the vacuum vessel on re-circulation rate and mixing times were studied in detail. il.
