An Agent Based Decision Support System for Catalogue-based Design in a Networked Environment
In engineering design, an intelligent catalogue search tool can make the component selection process more efficient. This paper presents a tool to support decision-making for the component selection problem. A novel component selection strategy is developed and the corresponding decision flow chart is presented. The selection process consists of two aspects: the component type selection and component size selection. The decision support system is based on the intelligent agent-based technique. A multi-agent system architecture is established and presented. The Internet environment is considered as the operational medium since more and more manufactures are now distributing their product catalogues through the information highway. This would enable the engineers to carry out efficient and comprehensive component selection with multiple suppliers. Java technology is adopted to implement the proposed decision support system. The bearing selection problem is chosen to validate the proposed selection system.
