Tribology is the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion: friction, wear, and lubrication of moving parts in instruments, machinery, manufacturing.

The results from COST Action 516 research projects have improved the understanding of basic mechanisms of tribology and provided new solutions for better performances in many industrial applications. The benefits are especially in transportation, manufacturing and process industry, and energy production: energy savings, efficiency, quality, reliability, safety, and reduced environmental risks. .
