Abstract

An accelerator-driven sub-critical system (ADS) is a concept that could allow transmutation of long-lived nuclear waste with good efficiency. However , in an ADS, the window between the spallation target and the accelerator, the heavy metal spallation target (such as lead) itself, and the surrounding structural materials are subject to a wide variety of nuclear reactions induced by particles with energies much higher than those in conventional fission reactors. Nuclear cross-section data with high precision that are required for the design of ADS are lacking in this intermediate and high energy (20-2000 MeV) range.

A concerted action, undertaken by 12 European laboratories and with the use of five complementary high-quality European accelerator facilities, has permitted them to conceive and successfully realize an ambitious programme of well-chosen experiments with a view to filling this gap in the nuclear cross-section data. .
