Air pollution research report 77. Astaire-Atmospheric effects of aircraft emissions in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Proceedings of the EC advanced study course Bergen (NO), 22-31 August 1999

Funded under: FP5-EESD

Abstract

In order to review current state of knowledge of aircraft-induced impact on the atmosphere and environmental and economic consequences, a 10-day advanced study course was organized by the European Commission and the University of Oslo for postgraduate students and young scientists in this research area. The purpose of the advanced study course was to give and update on the current developments in the research related to atmospheric processes in general and the aircraft impact on the atmosphere in particular. It was important to include the general science of the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere region to see the problems of aircraft emissions in a wider scientific context.

The course covered a wide range of topics: atmospheric observations, process studies, observations from aircraft, studies of aircraft impact, and future directions in atmospheric research. The lecturers are active in international research programmes on atmospheric chemical and dynamical processes, and several of them were lead authors of the recent IPCC special report "Aviation and the global atmosphere". The course was divided into three parts:
-Lectures on the state of the art in atmospheric research.
-Poster presentation by the students and the young scientists of their own work.
-Group work by the students and young scientists, where the topic of the lectures were summarised.

Contributions from all three parts are included in this report.eport.
