Protective coatings: A contribution towards sustainable energy
Recent environmental concerns are among the driving forces for the development of advanced high temperature protective coatings. These coatings permit the progressive increase of operational temperature in energy conversion systems, increasing their efficiency thus reducing emissions of air pollutants. This paper reviews the status of high temperature oxidation/hot corrosion protective coatings, namely diffusion-type and overlay coatings, and of thermal barrier coatings that are typically used in energy conversion systems such as gas turbines and gasification units. The state-of-the-art and future trends in their development as well as current research activities are discussed.
