Abstract

The progression of HSM (hot strip mill), finishing train, work roll surface degradation (which is different to wear) has been observed, defined and monitored both online and of-line. Techniques and analyses architecture has been developed to characterize this surface degradation (numerical definition of feature and severity). It is now possible to follow/predict surface degradation in the online monitoring/control of roll, and thence strip surface quality.

The influence of parameters on work roll surface degradation were observed and analysed. These included roll type, material grade effects, cooling, lubrication, and reduction pattern. The key benefit has been the knowledge gain on the work roll surface behaviour during hot rolling. Ultimately, from the group of investigators, it is possible to dramatically retard the roll degradation and wear, thereby extending the rolling campaign life while still producing excellent strip surface. The challenge is to both verify the knowledge in off-line pilot trials of improved techniques, and to implement the knowledge into the hot mills operations. Key online will be the linking of the relevant monitor/information zones (e.g. strip surface, roll parameters and production parameters) to inter-relate parameter changes to follow and improve overall performance.

The knowledge available will, with effective implementation, allow a more cost-effective slab to strip hot rolling process, and greater security of the strip surface quality.ty.
