The mission of the Environment Institute (EI) is to carry out research in support of EU policy for the protection of the environment and the citizen. Prime objectives of the EI are to investigate the level and fate of contaminants in the air, water and soil, to assess the effects of those contaminants upon the environment and individuals, and to promote a sustainable energy supply.

This annual report looks at the accomplishments and activities of the EI in 2000 under the Fifth Framework Programme in the following areas:
-Air quality.
-Atmospheric processes in global change.
-Water research and monitoring.
-Soil and waste.
-Renewable energies.
-Environmental impact. impact.
