Abstract

The surface cleanliness of steel strips is an important consideration for automotive and drumstock grades. Surface contamination can adversely affect surface treatment. It even strongly modifies radiant exchange in heat treatment furnaces affecting metallurgical and mechanical properties.

Until now, measurement of surface residues was carried out manually. This method inevitably results in delays in production and can be inconsistent owing to variations in the manual procedures.

Therefore, this research project aims at developing automatic in-or online instrumentation capable of yielding such measurements.

Whilst non-contact methods might be feasible for the quantification of organic liquid contaminants, it was felt that automation of current manual contact sampling techniques was most likely to lead to a successful online measurement of particle contamination.

The research programme enabled significant progress in the field of the online measurement of pollution layer on moving steel strips.strips.
