Abstract

The objective of the IDEA project is to assess the feasibility of the electronic identification for farm animals and to validate identification systems in real field conditions. The DG Agri launched the IDEA Project (1998-2001) and the JRC is responsible of the technical and scientific support. One million animals (cattle, sheep, goats and buffalo) in 6 EU Member States will be identified applying 3 different types of electronic tags: ear tag, ruminal bolus and injectable transponder. The performance of electronic identification devices and the necessary organizational structure in a real livestock scenario will be evaluated. The analysis will determine whether electronic identification is a feasible system to trace animals from birth to the slaughterhouse. Preliminary results indicate that electronic ear tags and ruminal bolus presented the lowest mean percentages of losses with a retaining rate higher than commonly observed in plastic ear tags. Detailed data on loss, breakage, failures by animal type, tagging and reading data, people, etc, should be taken into consideration when further analysis will be performed with a large amount of data.)
