  • Application of microprecipitation on membrane filters for alpha spectrometry, liquid scintillation counting and mass spectrometric determination of plutonium isotopes

Abstract

In this paper, a combined method for the determination of {238}Pu, {239}Pu, {240}Pu and {241}Pu based on alpha spectrometry, liquid scintillation counting and high resolution mass spectrometry is described. For the determination of plutonium isotopes in environmental samples by alpha spectrometry, chemical separation of plutonium together with preparation of a suitable sample for measurement is necessary. For the alpha spectrometric measurement, sample preparation by co-precipitation of Pu with NdF(3) on a membrane filter is widely used. This sample preparation method has been applied in the present work as a pre-concentration step for the determination of {240}Pu/{239}Pu by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). {241}Pu was measured on a part of the filter by Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC).
