The Institute for Transuranium Elements operated two safeguards analytical on-site laboratories on behalf of the Euratom Safeguards Office (ESO). These laboratories are located on the site of the two large European reprocessing plants at La Hague (FR) and Sellafield (GB). The laboratories provide measurement results on samples that have been taken by ESO inspectors. In order to assure a constantly high level of the quality of these results, a stringent quality control concept was implemented. It forms an integral part of the analytical strategy of the laboratory and covers all material types and all analytical methods used. The quality control is structured in five levels ranging from instrument checks to participation in external quality control programmes. These five levels of quality control will be described in detail.
