Abstract

Over the last couple of years the application area for photovoltaic products is widening. At present, most PV products technical specifications report electrical and mechanical characteristics. It is evident that building products have other specifications, such as thermal and optical properties. Field-testing of PV products under realistic conditions is therefore needed. The BBRI co-ordinates the European network of outdoor test facilities PASLINK EEIG that performs the testing, monitoring and analysis of building components. The renewable Energies Unit of the JRC is a partner in the network from the beginning. At the JRC the ESTI laboratory and the outdoor test facility for BIPV systems is available. At present the network runs the project IQ-TEST on improving quality in testing, evaluation procedures of solar and thermal performances of building components.

Areas where the PASLINK EEIG network could give support to the PV industry, designers and decision makers, are on the performance evaluation of the complex interactions of the PV product with the building envelope and its interior. This performance evaluation includes: electrical, thermal, visual, ventilation and aspects such as condensation and durability.

The expertise available in the network ranges from field testing and monitoring to advanced data analysis and could contribute to the PV community in order to improve their products that are intended for integration in the building envelope. The paper will present results that have been achieved including examples of typical problem areas that the integration of PV products in the building envelope may face. ce.
