European competitiveness report 2001
This is the 5th edition of the Commission's Report of the European competitiveness since the 1994 Industry Council Resolution that established the basis for the Competitiveness Report. Competitiveness in this report is understood to mean a sustained rise in the standards of living of a nation and as low a level of involuntary unemployment as possible. The special theme of this report is an analysis of the contribution of information and communication technologies (ICT) and of innovation to productivity and to economic growth. In addition, the report contains a chapter on the innovative capacity of European biotechnology.
