Actinide research and its uses, provided the subject material for the first summer school organized by the Institut fur Transurane (Institute for Transuranium Elements) in Karlsruhe. From 20 to 23 June 2001, 73 students and young scientists came to the ITU to broaden their knowledge of actinides and the nuclear fuel cycle during seminars and laboratory visits. The school was fully booked almost immediately, with participants from EU Member States and candidate countries, Russia, Ukraine, China, India, Japan und the US. This extremely positive response was unexpected and only serves to underline the considerable interest in basic nuclear research.
