New building systems and concepts, based on perforated light steel profiles, are being developed and demonstrated to the public in Finland. Through a comprehensive R & D and demonstration project, Rautaruukki Oy has pointed out that light steel frame is adaptable for low-energy construction. These systems and concepts are also adaptable in other European countries.

The aim of the project was to ensure adequate performance, suitability and economy of a light-gauge steel frame under cold climatic conditions. The project included research work, product development and testing of the building envelope for structural capacity and hydrothermal performance as well as research on the energy performance and environmental impacts of steel buildings. .
