Abstract

Against a background of contemporary processes of globalisation and the loosening of State control over the means of violence, the eight papers collected here explore the high level of experimentation currently taking place in the reconstruction of relations of civil-military difference and similarity. Rather than attempting to provide comprehensive coverage, the papers serve to open windows on to broad processes of change in three areas:
- The changing identity of defence industries and individual company cultures.
-Contemporary trends in military training and recruitment with particular reference to woman's participation in military organizations.
-Changing approaches to warfare and war fighting in the face of what are claimed to be revolutionary changes in military restructuring.

The papers in this volume also point to the importance of keeping what so easily become taken-for-granted categories of analysis up to date with the processes shaping their qualitative transformation. ion.
