Radar hydrology for real time flood forecasting - Proceedings of an advanced study course

In recent years there has been serious widespread flooding within many of the Member States of the European Union. This has resulted in loss of life, risks of public health, damage to property and business and damage to ecosystems. The significant economic and social implications of this have led to growing concern and disquiet within the European Union because the frequency of major flood events may increase as a direct consequence of global warming. These proceedings describe the contents of the highly successful advanced study course, Radar hydrology for real time flood forecasting, held at the University of Bristol in June 1998. They cover a wide range of topics within the fields of hydrological applications of weather radars and real time flood forecasting models, and thus bring together expertise from both hydrological and meteorological communities in the search for multidisciplinary solutions. Aspects of rainfall forecasting and the modelling methods used to transform this data into timely and accurate flood forecasts for a range of catchments from large river basins to flash floods on smaller rivers and drainage system flooding in urban areas are investigated. This provides a comprehensive understanding of the full scientific complexity of the flooding problem, the disciplines and technology that may be used to monitor and assess it and the latest advances in predictive tools and operational infrastructure that can be used to minimize its impact.
