The main objective of COST Action E9 is to expand multidisciplinary life cycle assessments (LCAs) to cover the whole forestry and forest chain, to coordinate the research activities in that area, to improve methods of data collection, and to establish a European forum on LCA in forestry and forest products.

The mid-term seminar of COST Action E9 held from March 2000 in Espoo (FI), focused on the elaboration of guidelines and the refinement of the methods required for the further development of life cycle assessment in the field of forestry and forest products. .
