This collaborative project, involving British Steel Strip Products and Hoogovens R&D, focused on the coating adhesion and aesthetic surface finish of hot dip Galvannealed products, both as produced and in the painted form. The project also aimed to determine the influence of the physical and chemical characteristics of the steel substrate region (the so-called 'alloying reaction zone' of about one micron thickness).

The general trend was for the surface texture to increase after galvannealing, but to decrease after temper rolling. Paint appearance quality decreased with increasing surface texture. ECT texturing methods should be further investigated to determine the feasibility of this technique on a production scale.

The second part of the work concentrated on ion implantation of elements into the first micron of the steel surface. The technique developed through the project indicated that silicon can be implanted into the surface of the steel, and galvannealing can then occur. Larger scale evaluation is recommended.ed.
