The overall aim of this collaborative project between Aceralia, British Steel plc, CSM and CRM was:

-Defining how to utilize galvannealed (GA) coatings in sectors such as building and home appliances, in which this material is not yet used, and to verify the benefits.

-Identifying process parameters to be optimized to achieve uniform and thinner coating and to allow cost reduction.

For the building sector, industrially pre-painted GA on a substrate with a coating weight of -60 g/m2 and on a conventional material (HDG -100 g/m2 ) were compared. A better behaviour of GA resulted in terms of adhesion and paint delaminating.

The performance of laminated and galvanneal HDG steel was studied. In adhesion tests GA generally shows superior performance, while, apart from some laminate systems, in corrosion tests HDGs perform better.

It was verified that GA is a substrate adequate to specific requirements for the 'wet' appliance sector products and that it is possible to simplify the conventional post-painting of assembled panels by using pre-passivated galvannealed.

Concerning the GA process, the possibility of wiping the coating by combining the classical pneumatic way with magnetic means was studied. One prototype has given some good results and a decrease of 20 to 35% of the final coating weight has been obtained.n obtained.
