Socio-economic projects in energy and environment

Funded under: FP5-EESD

The Fifth Research and Technological Development Framework Programme of the European Union covers the energy and environment issues in a broad perspective: from concrete short-term problems to be solved to the development of long-term potential scenarios.

The Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development programme together with the Euratom programme on Nuclear energy fusion, fission and radiological sciences amount to a funding of 3 billion euro (roughly one-third for non-nuclear energy, one-third for environment and one-third for nuclear energy). It provides the basis for an improvement of European energy technologies and gives the opportunity to better evaluate and support energy and environment policies: security of supply, climate change targets, safety, efficiency.

This booklet presents the abstracts and the useful administrative data of the socio-economic projects from different key actions and generic activities. The objective is to go beyond the traditional "sectorial" views and to tackle some common questions in the fields of non-nuclear energy (renewables and efficiency), environment (global change) and nuclear energy (fission and fusion).

The main socio-economic key questions deal with:
- Modelling and Scenarios.
- Direct and External costs.
- Policy instruments and Governance.
- Social acceptability. tability.
