A series of cyclic and seismic tests on large-scale models of bridge piers were performed in the ELSA laboratory of the JRC. The test campaign concerns an existing RC highway bridge designed in 1975. Cyclic tests on 1:2.5 models of one tall and one short bridge piers were followed by pseudo-dynamic testing of the whole bridge structure, considering asynchronous motion and nonlinear substructuring. The seismic response of a typical European highway bridge designed without earthquake provisions and situated in a low to medium-seismicity region was assessed.
