Abstract

Distortion caused by differential cooling means that H beams usually require straightening before being despatched. Conventional straightening techniques are inherently inefficient and can give rise to high stress levels, which impair the quality of the product. The aim of the project was to develop the new technique of flange-tip straightening to industrial maturity. The project was deemed to be highly successful in 3 areas:

- Pilot plant designs were implemented on a production machine with maximum efficiency.
- Flange-tip straightening was shown to be as successful as conventional straightening in achieving vertical straightening.
- A significant load reduction (typically 20-30 tonnes) is achievable during flange-tip straightening and there is the potential for further reduction. on.
