Since 1992, CRM and IRSID have conducted a common research for developing the feed head casting technology, the basic idea of which is to shift the meniscus zone upstream of the solidification area. The results obtained during Phase 1 show the feasibility of the original idea, and the main elements of the new technology have been defined during tests on pilot casters. This report presents the second phase of the project, which involves the transformation of an existing caster and industrial tests. It had previously been shown that coating the copper ring with a Ni layer of 2 mm on the superior face and 1 mm on the hot face reduces the average heat flux density, so this configuration was adopted for the industrial trials. In relation to refractory aspects, investigations centred on the setting of the refractories and the search for new materials. In the industrial trials it was found that the surface quality of the cast product is significantly improved in comparison with the conventional process, and the solidification process is also improved.
