Report on Contract No. 7215-CA/309 - 1 July 1996 to 30 June 1999

Stainless steels are cold rolled with mineral oils as a lubricant. These oils partially vaporize during the storage of the coils, which are still hot and are a source of pollution in the workshops. The project aims to suppress this pollution by constructing a pilot plant which isolates the storage zone to a chamber designed to ensure easy handling of the coils, and is also purifies the chamber atmosphere using a mixture of newly-developed zeolites which traps the rolling oil contaminants.

The construction and operation of a pilot filtration unit with zeolite filters have shown that it is possible to:
- Process 650 reels of stainless steel exiting from the rolling mill (10 000 tonnes/month) by cleaning the reels with 6000 cubic metres per hour of air.
- Absorb the mist of oil given off by the reels.
- Purify the 6000 cubic metres per hour of air in a manner that enables it to be recycled in the rolling chamber.
- Reduce the maintenance effort (a change of the zeolite filters every two months).

It is thus possible to plan both for a productivity increase in the Sendzimir rolling mill by increasing the rolling speed and reducing the number of stages, and for an improvement in working conditions in the area of the rolling mills. ng mills.
