Abstract

Final report of Contract No. 7215-CA/305; 1 July 1993 to 30 June 1997

A high scale pilot installation was built, which proved capable of attaining the target performance characteristics: tension control accuracy, ability to run various thicknesses and ability of high speed running. Cold aluminium strips were used for wrinkling studies, which showed that strip thickness has a major influence on wrinkling, and the length of the flat part of the roll is a very sensitive factor. Speed and strip width have a much smaller influence, but the roll diameter has influence when the strip thickness is over 0.3 mm.

The second part of the work deals with strip guiding, and proposes a simple analytical model to describe previously reported results and those of the Irsid project (on cold aluminium and cold steel strips). To enlarge the scope to guiding of hot strip, trials were conducted on the CRM pilot. Very high centring coefficients were measured, more than predicted on hot strip. This can be explained by an important flatness defect created by profiled rolls on hot strip. ip.
