Identification of oxidation hair dyes in cosmetic formulations by means of RP-HPLC and DAD
A cosmetic formulation for permanent hair dyeing can be described as a mixture of two kinds of products: oxidative hair dyes, so called active compounds, and matrix compounds. Oxidative hair dyes are aromatic organic compounds, e.g. amines, phenols and derivatives etc. In the cosmetic industry, a broad range of products can be used as matrix compounds. These products belong to several chemical and functional groups, e.g. surfactants, pH adjusters, consistency providers, antioxidants, emulsifiers, film formers, preservatives, perfumes, perfume solubilisers. The biggest challenge is thus to identify the active products into a complex matrix mixture in order to propose a candidate reference method for the analysis of this type of cosmetic products with the aim of implementing the European Union Cosmetic Directives 76/768/EEC and 95/17/EC. This paper gives an overview of the overall method and its applications.
