Abstract

Final report on Contract No 7210-CA/186, 187, 188, 840; 1 July 1996 to 30 June 2000

Extensive studies on the process of strand reduction and its effect on macro-segregation have been carried out in a partnership between steel-making companies and research institutions from Germany and the UK.

Intentional bulging soft reduction with a lifted roll in a bloom caster has been tested, and was subsequently adopted as a standard practice due to considerable improvement in centreline segregation. Thermal soft reduction was found to reduce central porosity in billet casting. Several soft reduction concepts have been examined on slab casters. The most successful was classical soft reduction on a new casting machine. It was shown to reduce macro-segregation; there is even potential for further improvement. Results have been evaluated using newly developed methods of macro-etching and image analysis. Numerical modelling developments carried out by the partners have covered thermal modelling, macro-segregation, fluid flow and strand rolling, and were supported by laboratory measurements of macro-segregation. Complex finite element simulations have clarified basic features of the process and were compared with measured data in this project. ct.
