Abstract

The report discusses the economic transformation of the candidate countries and its consequences for the enlarged EU. It gives a description of the economic implications of technological, economic and social change, such as the greater use of ICT: the shifting geography of the economic activities and the ageing of the society. The trade-offs between high growth and macroeconomic stability are highly relevant of the setting of economic objectives in catching-up countries. Innovation and R&D are crucial elements for futures growth and, within fiscal constraints, will determine future growth. In all these respects there may be big differences between the candidate countries.
