Abstract

The need to make existing buildings less vulnerable to the effects of earthquakes requires the development of appropriate codes for the retrofitting of existing structures. This project addresses a number of issues in this field:

- Development of rapid screening methods for the assessment of existing structures.
- Development of analytical methods and procedures for assessment.
- Experimental assessment of bare and infilled structures and investigation of various retrofitting techniques: a selective retrofitting scheme, providing either strength or ductility or stiffness; shotcrete of infill walls; k-bracing with dissipative devices.

The report focuses on the experimental research work carried out at the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) of the JRC Institute for the Protection and the Security of the Citizen. Specifically, it is devoted to the tests carried out on a 4-storey reinforced concrete bare frame, which was tested for increasing intensities of the earthquake input motion, both before and after its retrofitting.

This work was developed in the framework of the ICONS project (Topic 2 - Assessment, Strengthening and Repair), and was financed by the TMR-Large-Scale Facilities programme of the European Commission.
